FAQ: Computer Recycling & Data Destruction in Maine
Is there a fee for computer recycling in Portland, Maine?
Computer Be Gone provides free e-waste pickup for residents and businesses located within 10 miles of South Portland, including Portland and Cape Elizabeth. For locations further away, such as Augusta or Kittery, we offer pickup services for a nominal travel fee. We accept most computers, servers, and networking equipment at no cost.
How do I get a Certificate of Data Destruction for my business?
For businesses requiring HIPAA or legal compliance, Computer Be Gone offers certified data destruction. We charge a small fee per hard drive to provide a formal Certificate of Media Destruction, which documents the serial numbers and destruction methods used to ensure your sensitive data is unrecoverable.
What data destruction standards do you use?
We utilize sanitization methods that align with NIST 800-88 standards, the current "gold standard" for data destruction in 2026. Unlike the outdated DoD 5220.22-M standard, NIST 800-88 is designed for modern storage like SSDs and NVMe drives, ensuring that all data is purged or physically destroyed beyond forensic recovery.
Is Computer Be Gone registered with the Maine DEP?
Yes. Computer Be Gone is a registered electronics waste collector with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). We report our recycling volumes quarterly and strictly follow Maine’s Universal Waste rules to ensure that hazardous materials like lead and mercury are kept out of local landfills.
Can you pick up large quantities of office electronics?
Absolutely. We specialize in Business Electronics Recycling for small to medium-sized offices. Whether you have five laptops or an entire server room of decommissioned gear, we handle the logistics, pickup, and compliant disposal. You can book a specific pickup window directly through our website.
